Why Music?
The brain is a very impressive tool which can be affected in so many different ways, sometimes without us even really realising. I am sure you have previously experienced a kind of natural high or euphoric experience when you have been in a good mood and one of your favourite songs has come on the radio or your MP3 player and heightened your mood and happiness? Well music can also alter your state of mind as well as just enhancing it.
Music can be great therapy, it is great for relaxing and coming down from a busy day before you go to bed. Alternately you could help yourself to wake up and get energised in the morning by playing a more upbeat track in the shower before work. Music therapy is becoming more and more popular for treating problems such as insomnia and stress, why not couple stress reliever’s together by listening to your favourite chill out track in the shower.
How does it work?
Research has shown that your brainwaves can be affected by the tempo of music. If you are listening to an upbeat or fast paced track you will experience heightened alertness and concentration whereas if listening to slower music you will be calmed and soothed.
With these changes in brain waves comes other bodily changes such as reduced heart rate and suppression of feelings such as depression and anxiety. Finally music can be seen to lower blood pressure which eases muscle tension and helps you to relax.

History of Showers – Origins
Over the last 50 years, showers have become more popular than having a bath. Showers are more time effective, consume less water and are more hygienic as we are not sitting in our dirty water for 30 odd minutes!
So where did the concept of a shower really come from? People had been bathing in seas, lakes and rivers since the dawn of time and it is speculated that the first showers were indeed taken under waterfalls. People realised the downward pressure of the water would help them clean, and it was far easier than washing in say a basin where fresh/waste water had to be transported manually.
The first group of people to have showers that would be recognizable to a modern person were the ancient Greeks. Their aqueducts and sewage systems made of lead pipes allowed water to be pumped both into and out of large communal shower rooms. These rooms have been discovered at the site of the city Pergamum and can also be found represented in pottery of the era. The depictions are very similar to modern locker room shower, and even included bars to hang up clothing.
There is also evidence of the Greeks having servants pour buckets of cold water on the bather as they scrubbed themselves clean.
The Romans later followed suit. Their famous bathhouses can be found all around the Mediterranean and spread across the empire as far as England. The Romans believed in bathing multiple times a week for hygiene and health benefits, if not every day.
Archaeology shows the Ancient Egyptians had a shower room that was very similar to the Ancient Greeks', where slaves poured vases of cold water over the bather's body.
Over the coming posts we will look into how these old methods and techniques that have lead to the development of the showers we know and use today.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the use of water to promote health and healing. By harnessing the effects of water on the body; buoyancy, warmth, and turbulence (hydro-massage), we are able to help reduce the effects of pain, stress and discomfort. Hydrotherapy is found to be especially beneficial for people with sports injuries, arthritis, aching joints, muscular pain, stress, stiffness, rheumatism, sciatica and general tiredness and aching brought on by modern living and much more besides.
How does it work?
When the body is immersed in water, it is as much as 80% lighter, removing pressure on the muscles, joints, ligaments and spine. The warmth of the water (or steam) causes the blood vessels to dilate (increase in diameter), which increases blood circulation around the body. Heat also enables the cells to more easily rid themselves of metabolic waste, which is replaced by oxygen and the body's natural nutrients. The movement of the water passing over the body gives direct and often immediate relief as it massages the muscles and joints. This is most especially noticeable in Whirlpools where the powerful jets massage the body. This direct stimulation relaxes the muscles in the area, so allowing the muscle or joint to de-stress. As the water massages areas of the body, endorphins are produced, which in turn further assist pain relief.
Massage has been shown to improve flexibility, increase circulation and provides generally restorative benefits. When you are in pain or under stress, chemical changes in your body can cause blood pressure and pulse rate to increase. The use of regular hydrotherapy treatments can help to reduce these symptoms by slowing down the process of stress reaction.
Hydrotherapy is also thought to also help regulate the body’s temperature by improving the efficiency of the body to perspire. This further helps the body remove toxins and can lead to a much improved skin appearance and healthy glow!
